Drawing occupies much of Steve's time and his pocket invariably contains the stub of a pencil worn down to i's final point. On a school art trip he recalls drawing a picture that had the two supervising teachers both suggesting that other had drawn it, until, having discovered this was not the case, they reluctantly credited the work to the artist. Steve enjoys traditional illustration and classic comic book artwork, but his atmospheric, muted drawings are far from Marvel's technicolor world of superheroes. Shadowy landscapes, dense mist and murky water conjure a latent menace that give the occasionally fairytale architecture and characters populating his work a plaintive, real quality.
